A minimum of eleven courses from among the required 和 elective bio化学 courses must be completed for the major. 学生进入 数学1800 多变量微积分 或者更高 数学1300 Introduction to Statistics 和 Computation, 数学1756 数据科学, or one math course at the 1800-level or above.

Additional Information 和 Program 政策

• Only one D grade is allowed in courses required for the major. This D must be offset by a grade of B or higher in another course also required for the major.
• Students may not count courses taken Credit/D/Fail toward the major.
• Advanced placement exams are used for placement in courses for the bio化学 major, but do not count toward the eleven courses required for the major.
• 生物化学 majors cannot minor or major in 生物学, 化学, 或神经科学, 和 may only double-count courses to a second major or a minor with permission of the 生物化学 Program.
• Bowdoin does not offer a minor in bio化学.
• Students may request transfer credit by talking with the program director the semester prior to enrolling in a course.
• Independent studies do not count as an elective, but can count as one of the eleven required courses for the major.
• Students may engage in independent study at the advanced (4000–4051) level. Majors pursuing honors in bio化学 are required to register for BIOC 4050 during the first semester of their senior year 和 BIOC 4051 during the second semester of their senior year.
• Advanced independent studies 和 honors projects do not count as electives, but may be applied to towards the total number of credits required to complete the major. 
• Many research advisors require that students perform summer research in their laboratory prior to registering for advanced independent study, so interested students should aim to finalize such plans with their prospective research advisor in the first semester of their junior year.

Information for Incoming Students

The 生物化学 major requires a firm foundation in both 化学 和 生物学 prior to enrollment in the core bio化学 courses. First-year students with an interest in bio化学 should complete introductory 化学 coursework (化学1091 Introductory Chemistry 和 Quantitative Reasoning I, 化学1092 Introductory Chemistry 和 Quantitative Reasoning II, 化学1101 化学入门I, 化学1102 化学导论II or 化学1109 普通化学) 和 introductory 生物学 coursework (杂志1101年 生物学原理1, 杂志1102年 生物学原理II or 杂志1109年 Scientific Reasoning in Biology) by the end of the first year, if possible. 请参阅 生物学 和 化学 sections of the Catalogue for information about introductory course sequences 和 proper placement.

If placement results indicate a two-semester introductory 化学 sequence is required, students are recommended to begin with introductory 化学 in their first semester. If the two-semester introductory 生物学 sequence is also required, one option is to complete these courses in the sophomore year, in parallel with the organic 化学 sequence; please consult with a member of the bio化学 program for suggestions about timing. The most important planning step is to ensure that 化学1092 Introductory Chemistry 和 Quantitative Reasoning II, or 化学1102 化学导论II, or 化学1109 普通化学 is completed during the first year to enable enrollment in the two-semester organic 化学 sequence in the sophomore year. If you place into 2000-level 化学, taking organic 化学 in your first year is a viable option 和 can provide flexibility in the major. We strongly recommend completing the Organic Chemistry two-semester sequence by the end of the sophomore year if you intend to major in 生物化学. Please contact a member of the bio化学 program if you have any questions. 

Note that completing the tiered bio化学 major requires, 在大多数情况下, that students take a math 和 a lab-science course, 或者上两节实验科学课, at the same time in their first year. This is most often during the second semester; for example, a student placed in 化学1101 化学入门I/化学1102 化学导论II 和 杂志1109年 Scientific Reasoning in Biology 可以选择报名吗 化学1102 化学导论II 和 杂志1109年 Scientific Reasoning in Biology in their second semester of their first year. Taking more than one math/lab-science course in the same semester of the first year can be challenging, so students are encouraged to speak with their pre-major academic advisors about designing a feasible course schedule if they are considering future study in bio化学.
